New England graveyards are filled with many dutiful daughters and Martha is that daughter in this family. She was only one of three surviving children born to Christoper and Martha (Stanton) Gallup. If the small children buried in the row died of disease, Martha was immune. She may not have known her siblings, Asa, Sally and Sarah as she was just a little girl when they died. New England families didn't mourn long, there was too much surviving to do when you live on a farm.

Dutiful Daughters are those who did not marry and stayed home to tend to younger children and care for aged parents. We know she was born 26 Sept 1796, baptized on 21 Oct 1827, and died on 9 May 1842.

Her church record reads: Gallup, Martha, adm child [admitted as a child] 21 Oct 1827 and died [ ] 1842. page 10 of Ledyard Congregational church records. Her baptism may not have been officially recorded until the year she died.

She is listed in the 1840 census as living with her widowed father. Her sisters, Betsey and Julia having married both marrying men named Williams.

She was only 46 when she died, leaving her father alone.
