Sally WILCOX

If this grave was upright, it would still be readable.

Sally WILCOX, whose name was Sarah, was the wife John BARBER. She was the daughter of Isaiah Wilcox and his wife Sarah Lewis and granddaughter of Stephen Wilcox and his wife Mercy Randall and John Lewis and his wife Thankful Lewis.

She was born 19 Dec 1767 in Westerly and died 5 July 1810. She married John Barber (the son of Nathan Barber and Thankful Maxson) on 9 Jan 1790 in Westerly. He was born 21 Dec 1765 in Hopkinton, RI.

"Mrs. Sally, wife of John Barber, died July 3, 1810 in her 44th year"

Rev. Denison's date differs from the gravestone by 2 days so it may be that the 3 on the gravestone is really a 5.

This grave is directly behind Mary Pendleton Barber's grave and because there are so few markers in the burying ground, I can assume this is the grave of the unmarried daughter of Nathan Barber and Mary Pendleton. It is broken and we could not find the top half.

Rev. Frederick Denison in his book "Westerly & its Witnesses" states: Nancy (dau. of Capt. Nathan and Mary Barber) died Jan. 9, 1818 age 22.

Note that Nancy died on the 9th and her mother died on the 16th of the same month and year.

This is the only clearly readable and upright grave in this small burying ground.

Mary PENDLETON, daughter of Frederick and Lucy Pendleton was born 7 May 1760 in Hopkinton, RI and died 16 Jan. 1818 probably in Westerly.

Capt. Nathan BARBER Jr.'s gravestone is fairly readable and has a RI Veteran's flag holder. (My husband, also a Vet offered to move the flag so I could get a clearer shot). The shadow was unavoidable but at least you can see it is me.

Nathan (son of Nathan, Sr and his wife Thankful Maxson) was a fourth generation descendant from Moses Barber. (Nathan 3, Benjamin2, Moses1). He was born 7 May 1760 in Westerly, RI and died 19 Sept 1835. The dates are from the RI Genealogical Register and the Historical Cemeteries database.

Lois Barber Schroeder's book lists him as #31 on page 326. He was the husband of Mary PENDLETON.

All we can read on this stone is the initials NB so it may be the footstone?

Yes, those are my feet.

RI Historical Cemetery #5 Westerly

RI Historical Cemetery #5 is in Westerly RI.

It is called Barber Ground (1) or Barber Lot and is off the road down in a section of land that is still farmed. It is in the meadow. It is marked by this sign and does have a fence around it.

I visited this cemetery on 30 May 2007 with my husband and Jean Breen Barber of Westerly. The conditions for photographing it were less than ideal but we did manage to take shots of each stone we could find.

I came home and looked it up in the RI Historical Cemeteries database (at NEHGS). It is listed as 100 ft south of Shore Road, 100 feet south of telephone pole #537. This is how the RI cemeteries are marked in many books. Makes you wonder what people will do when there are no telephone poles (GPS, I hope)

Rev Frederick Dension recorded this lot in 1867-1868 when it was on the Case Chapman Farm (which may now be owned by P.S. Peckham). When he recorded this cemetery most of the stones were prostrate and broken as they are today. Very sad.

He listed 11 burials with 6 inscriptions. We could only find six stones plus one footstone that we could identify. Fortunately they matched the cemetery database and what is recorded on page 276 of Rev. Dension's book, 'Westerly & its Witnesses".

She was a daughter of Jabez Champlin GARDINER and his first wife Eliza BICKNELL. She had a sister Dorcas GARDINER who married a man whose last name was GARDINER!

Jabez may have had a brother named Joseph Champlin GARDINER. I need a lot of help on this line so please if you know anything about this, please help me.
