Capt' Joseph W. Holmes, was the son of Cap't Jeremiah Homes and his wife Ann Borodell Denison.

The Denison genealogy #2444, page 82 lists him as Joseph Warren HOLMES born 1 April 1824 who married Mary O. DENISON.

Gravestone reads:

" In memory of Mr./ Jeremiah Holmes / who died march /8th 1791, in the 40th year of his age/ Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord"

This is the son of Cap't John HOLMES and his 3rd wife Hannah HULSE. Jeremiah was born 19 Nov 1751, bp. 2 Aug 1752 and died 8 March 1791. Wheeler's History of Stonington lists him incorrectly as Jedediah.

Jeremiah died at Mystic at age 39 on 8 March 1791.

Gravestone reads:
"In memory of / Mrs. Hannah Holmes / 3rd wife of /Cap't John Holmes / who died / May 12, 1805 / in the 82d year / of her age"

This is Hannah HULSE, "of So. Hampton" [not Hannah HALSEY as incorrectly listed in Wheeler's History of Stonington] She was born abt 1724 and died at Stonington at 81 years.

This gravestone is mentioned in the article in The Register (NEHGS) mentioned in my blog entry for her husband.

It mentions her husband bought a farm from Samuel FISH who must be my ancestor Cap't Samuel FISH of Groton.

Gravestone reads:
"Cap't / John Holmes /1703-1785"

However, in The Register (NEHGS) an article by White, Laundry and Hayward, titled "Joshua Holmes of Stonington, Connecticut 1678-1729)" Apr 1988 pps. 165-176 corrects several mistakes made in the Holmes family in Wheeler's History of Stonington.

Capt' John4 Holmes (Joshua3, Joshua2, Robert1) [page 168-168] lists his birth as 10 June 1702 and died in 1783. They mention this gravestone and state that it was erected at a later date after his death. John has three wives: Abigail FRINK, Mary SMITH and Hannah HULSE. He had children by his first and third wives.

The interesting verse on this stone reads:
"The hungry never went away without being fed, nor the different without being beloved."

This stone remained a mystery until we used a mirror to see the letters and numbers more clearly. Ihave posted this shot here however because the surname for the married couple is craved at the base of the stone.

Above that is the clasped hands "handshake" of two hands. Notice the sleeves. One sleeve is masculine and the other feminine which means holy matrimony. (Carmack: 216)

So before we even try to find out who this is we know the family surname [Denison] and that the two names carved on the "book of life" indicates a couple probably married many years with numerous descendants.

Of course, that doesn't mean we know who they are as yet. See the next post...

b. 1788 [Denison Genealogy #1790 p. 120] married Esther GALLUP [Denison Genealogy #1221 p. 43] and lived in Rutherford, New Jersey and had 6 children. Note the recorded differences in his birth date.

Esther was born in Knox, Albany, NY the daughter of Gen. John Gallup [son of Joseph Gallup and his wife Mary Gardner] (1758-1825) and his wife Hannah DENISON (1759-1830)

Ellery E. BARBER, Civil War Veteran, was born 9 Sept 1843 in Westerly, Washington, RI and died 21 Mar 1923 in Westerly, Washington, RI. He was the oldest son of Matthew Stillman BARBER and his second wife Rhoda Ann BABCOCK. He married Fannie E. HALL on 13 Dec 1888. He is buried in Section 28 of River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, RI alonside his wife and one daughter.

He was in the Ist Rhode Island Light Infantry, Company G and fought alongside his half-brother James Albert BARBER. After the war, he was the overseer of the poor for the town of Westerly in addition to other jobs. He was the father of three daughters.

Thomas2 BARBER (Moses1) was the brother of my ancestors Benjamin BARBER and his sister Susannah BARBER. This is a memorial stone erected by his descendants.

Avis Barber 1700-1777

Avis TANNER , dau. of William Tanner and wife Hannah Tibbets married Thomas BARBER 18 Apr 1723. Thomas2 1699-1762 (not listed on stone) was the son of Moses1 Barber. Avis d. 17 Feb 1777 [Avis was the mother of Dea. Weeden Barber on front side of stone]

Thomas and Avis had a daughter Dinah b. 3 May 1729 who married a Thomas Greene (Diamy Greene 1728-1809.) They also had a daughter Martha b. ca. 1767 who married Edward Hoxsie, she d. 19 Aug 1854

The rest are Palmer children: Deacon Weeden Barber and wife Hannah Lewis has a daughter Mary who married Amos N. PALMER and these must be their children.
