Tombstone Tuesday: John A. CHAMPLIN

John Aldrich CHAMPLIN's gravestone just gives us the basic information about him such as his death date of 10 May 1879 and that he was 84 years old at the time of his death. This puts his year of birth as 1795 and family lists this date as 10 Apr 1795. I can find no vital record that confirms this but not all RI towns are listed. I do know that families in RI had to pay a fee to have a birth recorded so this is why I can't find them all.

John's gravestone is situated between both his wives and there is a baby's grave behind one wife.

In 1840, prior to his marriage, John lives in Richmond, RI and after his first marriage he lives in Westerly until near his death as he outlived both wives. He is listed in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. In 1870 at the age of 75 he is listed as a mill worker. The 1860 census is very faint and hard to read.

I have found two researchers to help me with this line back to the immigrant Jeffrey Champlin.

I started reading your blog when I noticed some common surnames: BARBER, CHAMPLIN, CARD, and GARDINER.

Jeffrey Champlin is my 8th great-grandfather through his son, Christopher.

Well done!

Virginia! So glad you left a comment.

I was just working on Weeden Barber and his wife Tacy CARD's gravestone. Are these the Barber and Card's in your line?

Weeden and Tracy are not currently in my database, but I would hazard a guess that they should be! If I ever catch up I shall give you a list of those BARBERS, CHAMPLINS, CARDS, and GARDINERS that in my tree! I commend you on your most excellent blog, Midge!
