Capt. Waterman CLIFT was a son of Capt. Amos CLIFT and his 2nd wife Thankful DENISON. He and his wife Esther HAZARD are buried behind Amos and Thankful. When I took this photo, I was simply taking photos of all of the graves in this area.

This sturdy gravestone with large carved letters and dates is classic for the death dates of 1890.

Waterman was born 17 Sept 1809 and died 2 Jan 1890 in Stonington, New London, CT. He married Esther on 31 Aug 1835 in Mystic.According to the 1870 and 1880 census, this family lived in Groton and Waterman was a drayman which means he used a horse or mules to haul materials from one location to another.

Esther, his wife was born in Westerly, Rhode Island [source: 1860 census) and was possibly a descendant of the large family of people named Hazard. I have not fully researched Waterman and Esther and I have not found out why it says Capt. on this grave. {update: 1860 census says Mariner] Two sons are buried behind them.

Yes, Thankful Aletta CLIFT was a daughter of Capt. Waterman and Esther Clift.
