The Village was Shocked

Stonington Mirror July 10, 1886

When I was looking for a birth date of Dudley W. Stewart, my friend Fred Burdick offered kindly to use the microfilmed records at the Westerly Public Library in nearby Westerly, RI to help me find an obit for Dudley.

I scanned and cropped this from the page he sent me. The whole page is fascinating in itself because it has an ad for the circus. Well, it was July.

North Stonington was called Milltown when it was a village in the larger town of Stonington, CT. It was noted for the fulling mills there. [Town Hall Plaque in North Stonington] Fulling is a bit like felt.

As you can see, this is simply a notice that Dudley has died. It doesn't give the exact (the Sunday before) date, no mention of his widow or children and his surname is misspelled. But, it is definitely him as he was a selectman in the town and yes, he is buried in Mystic.

To be continued....
