Harriet H. STEWART

 Harriet H. STEWART

One of the gravestones in the Stewart Hill Cemetery in North Stonington, CT is Harriett, young daughter of George P. Stewart and his wife Polly Hewitt. Her simple gravestone bears some italic script that makes it hard to read.

The transcription of this cemetery says:

Stewart, Harriet H., daughter of George P. & Polly, died Apr. 20, 1823, age 6 yrs, 4 mos, 11 days

I would prefer to see just a simple birth and death date on instead of allowing the gravestone carver to calculate the birth. In just a few years the erosion of the numbers has made deciphering these dates even harder.

I took just a section of her stone because I didn't know anything about this branch of the Stewart family at the time. See how much clearer the numerals are? (or are they?)

Are the dates in the Stewart Clan Magazine more correct than the gravestone or are we interpreting the carvings incorrectly?

A comparison chart needs to be made for this gravestone. I'm working on it...
