Enclosed Monument

Walking toward the monument of Elder Henry Cobb, in the Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable, MA, I suddenly remembered that I had not looked at the number of photo requests at this cemetery's listing at Find a Grave. It was such a neatly maintained older cemetery, that I might have been able to accomplish that. Sigh.

This monument is surrounded by four granite corner markers with the rusty iron bars. I already knew that this was going to be hard to photograph. As small as I am, I knew I was not going to be able to "limbo" under to get a clear shot of the plaques that is on the ground. So, what was easy to spot at a distance from the road could prove to be a challenge up close.

Even a cemetery visit with a single minded purpose of locating one monument can be exhilarating and annoying at the same time.

My husband sprinted back to the car to get the photographer's reflecting circle. I walked closer to the monument and started to look at nearby "neighbor" stones. What I discovered right away was so interesting....

From the front near the wall, it was easy to spot the monument I was looking for after looking at the photos of it at Find a Grave.

Dave Lambert's book [2d ed p. 14) and the information from Find a Grave made it easy to find this cemetery. It is located on scenic route 6A in Barnstable. The opening for cars to drive in was quite narrow and was one way. You could almost imagine horse and buggy driving in to visit dead loved ones. It's date is 1694. I imagine that means that there are a lot of unmarked graves here in the "pasture".

Lothrop Hill Cemetery memorial to Rev. John Lothrop.

He was a gentle, kindly man and was beloved by all who knew him. 

Found in the front of the cemetery, outside the stone wall, is this memorial to Rev. John Lothrop of Barnstable. This type of monument often explains the name of the cemetery and tells us who he was.
It is good that this type of bronze plaque is encased firmly in cement to deter vandals for stealing it. Placed here in 1939

Erected to the memory of Rev. John Lothrop. 1584-1653 and such first settlers who fill unmarked graves in this cemetery and at the "Calves Pasture".

Mr. Lothrop was Pastor of the Church of England at Egerton 1611-1632, The Congregational Society at Southwark, London 1621-1632 .Confined to Newgate Prison, 1632-1634.
