George D. NOYES, first child, infant son of Cyrus NOYES and his wife Bridget Gallup DENISON lived only 24 days.

The Denison genealogy says he was born and died in April 1844 but this gravestone says he died May 24, 1844 aged 24 days.

Mary P. ["Polly"] BROWN, teenage daughter of Shubael Brown and his wife Lydia Palmer, was born 11 June 1794 and died 7 Aug 1810.

She is buried behind her parents and near her sister Roxanna who married John Burrows.

"In memory of Mary P. Brown/daughter of Shubael and Lydia Brown/who died Aug 7, 1801/aged 16 years."

Lydia7 PALMER (Ichabod6, Ichabod5,Ichabod4, Ichabod3, Gershom2, Walter1) wife of Shubael BROWN was born 1 Nov 1766 in Stonington and died 15 August 1815. She was the daughter of Ichabod PALMER and his wife Mary Grant.

The children of Shubael and Lydia are listed at his blog entry.

"In memory of/Mrs. Lydia Brown/Relict of/ Mr. Shubael Brown/who died/Aug.t 15th 1815/aged 48 years."

Shubael5BROWN, (Jedediah4, [Jr.], Jedediah3, John2, Thomas1 ) father of Roxana BROWN (who was the wife of John BURROWS) and father of Mary P. BROWN, was born 5 Oct 1758 in Stonington. He was the husband of Lydia PALMER. They married 16 March 1785. He died 18 Aug 1806 in Stonington.

The Genealogy records of the Palmer family give a different date of their marriage, which as a reader points out does not "fit" with the dates of the children's births. There is a birth record for Shubael but no marriage record in the Barbour Index of Vital Records of CT.

"In memory of/Mr. Shubael Brown/who died/Aug. t 18th 1806, /in the 47th year/of his age./"

Shubael and Lydia were the parents of 6 children:

Philura [b. 1787], Nancy [b. 1790], Polly [b. 1794], Roxana [b. 1798], Shubael [b. 1700] and Betsey [b. 1801]

Phoebe8 E. DENISON (Elisha7, Isaac6, Daniel5, Daniel4, Daniel3, John2, George1) b. 22 Sept. 1825 was the first wife of John PRENTICE. They were married 14 Feb 1847 and lived in Mystic. The couple had Charles M. [#4341] b. 19 July 1848, William H. [#4342] b. 17 Sept 1850 and Mary A. [#4343] b. 26 Jan 1855.

After Phoebe died on 15 Oct, 1858, John married in 1859 Lucy S. FITCH.

This is a photograph of my grandfather, Evans Stewart. He loved to have me sit in his lap and listen to him read to me.

My very first book, inscribed to me for my second birthday was an Audubon Bird Guide. Grandpa and I would watch the birds from his favorite spot in the dining room.

My grandmother, upon meeting my husband, was overcome. She said he looked so much like Evans and she gave me this photo.

She was right.

Evans is buried behind the large Denison stone with his wife, Hannah Josephine Barber, his son Evans Stewart, Jr. and his brother Dudley W. Stewart. His father, Charles and grandfather Dudley are buried nearby.

In this photograph, please observe the variety of sizes of gravestones. Smaller gravestones are mostly children or young persons who have died and in some time periods, large monuments meant the family was well to do or important in the community.

Some of the largest single gravestones are reserved for the clergy who are buried in a plot like this as the inscription is often lengthy and ornate.

As I have been to this plot many times over the years, I am nevertheless surprised when the camera captures something I had not noticed before. See the monument that says SEARS at the bottom? Because there are no names on that side, I have not photographed it before. Learn something every day, I guess.

As you can see by this view, it is important to examine the "back" and "sides" of each gravestone. By taking a photo like this one, you can be sure that even though the backs of these are not inscribed, I can be sure that they are not when I return home and look at my photos.

It is wonderful to work with a digital camera as you can take as many photos as needed to get the right information. With my present camera I bought a 1GB and 2GB memory stick.

This is section of the plot which contains the graves of the family of Frederick DENISON, Sr. and his wife Hannah FISH. The gravestone of Frederick is not very readable but by its postion next to the gravestone of Hannah were can be assured this is his resting place.

Visiting the Denison section at the Elm Grove Cemetery this past week, I took several shots of each section to fix the position of the graves in my mind. I also branched out to examine some more gravestones in nearby areas. I call them the "neighbors".

I also enjoyed finding some of someone elses ancestors while I was there. Wait until you hear about that.

This is the edge of the section where the Noyes folks are buried.
