Tombstone Tuesday: Morgan-BURROWS
This hefty granite gravestone has been in my collection since 30 May 2007 and somehow it got missed the day I posted the graves from the large Denison plot at Elm Grove Cemetery. I always worry that I will miss a photo!
Yesterday, while looking for a gravestone of the sea-faring Holmes family in this folder of photos, I said," Wait, isn't that a Burrows grave?" and put in in the center of my desktop to look up and thought it would make a great Tombstone Tuesday post.
Lydia BURROWS was the daughter of John Burrows and his wife Roxanna BROWN who are buried nearby. Daniel MORGAN was a postmaster. Daniel must be part of the seafaring MORGAN family, I think.
Off to put this information in my database and see what kind of information I can find!

Charles E. BURROWS
Third Row, Left Section [Grave #20 Photo # 3029]
Charles E. BURROWS, eldest son of Simeon S. BURROWS and his wife Frances G. LEWIS was born at New London, CT on 17 Jan 1849 and died 19 Jan 1886. His mother and father and siblings are buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London so he is the only descendant of his line buried here. [Source: Burrows genealogy, p. 163]
The Burrows genealogy says he married a woman named Nellie Ellen Jones who was born in England and they had one child named Raymond S. BURROWS who married Caroline COLLINS. This couple is buried at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic. [Source: Burrows genealogy, p. 164]
This gravestone is white bronze and although it looks like granite, is metal. I think they are so interesting. I always rap my knuckle on them as I pass by. Often, the back side lists another name but I took a photo of that and there is nothing on that panel. These graves were bought by mail order.

Phebe Greene Burrrows
Second Row, Left Side [Grave #16 Photo #3035]
Thia gravestone is the reason I went in search of this private graveyard.
Phebe was someone I knew as she was a friend of my grandmother. Because of her, I listened to the family history story that a Denison woman had married a Burrows man and raised his children which made them "family" to my Denison line.
Phebe's husband William Elijah BURROWS is buried with his parents in Pocasset Cemetery in Cranston, RI as he chose to bury his wife with her family here in the Burrows Cemetery and as he lived to be 95, it looks like his name may have been added to his parents gravestone.
In my minds eye, I can see my grandmother and Phebe sitting side by side in their beach chairs, chatting endlessly while the waves pounded the nearby beach.
I'm planning to add more to this post as I have done more research.

Daniel L. BURROWS
Front Row, Right Side [Grave #12] Photo # 3021
Daniel L. / Son of Benjamin & Lucy C. / BURROWS/ A member of Co. H. 14th Reg. Co./ Vol. died at Knoxville, Md. / Dec. 12, 1862 / Aged 16 Y.
Daniel was the second son of Benjamin Burrows and his second wife Lucy. Lucy died in 1858 which left Daniel and his brother Lorenzo alone with their father. Benjamin's other children were grown and living elsewhere.
In the 1860 census, Benjamin Burrows is 70 and has two young teenage sons. It is hard to imagine that young Daniel at 15 years old enlisted on 8 Aug 1862 and died of disease on 15 Nov 1862. This evidence doesn't match the date on this gravestone so I imagine this is the only information that was available to the family when Daniel's body was returned for burial.

Joseph Warren BURROWS
Front Row, Right Side [Grave #11] Photo # 3020
J. [Joseph] Warren BURROWS was born 3 Feb 1831 and died 17 Apr 1865 en-route home.
J. Warren was the last child of Benjamin BURROWS and his first wife Rebecca THOMPSON.
The Burrows genealogy states that he died on the Pacific Ocean e-route home from Marianas Islands and that he is buried here. When it says that someone died at sea, I wonder if the gravestone is just a memorial.
The inscription on this stone is quite vague about the island name and says he was going to the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) which is not home!
He was only 25 years old.

Benjamin married four times and had fifteen children by his first two wives who are buried here. Theoda Y. WILLIAMS of North Stonington was his third wife and he married her on 28 Mar 1859 and his fourth wife was Mrs. Sarah HOLDREDGE who he married on 10 Nov 1864. Sarah died 22 Nov 1870.
Benjamin went with his parents to Chenago County, NY in abt. 1803 but he didn't like the life of farming his father had chosen so he went back to Connecticut. Benjamin BURROWS, son of Capt. Benjamin Burrows, was married first, on 25 July 1838, to Sarah Amelia HAMMOND When she and their infant son (he died 10 June 1840, aged five days) died, Benjamin buried his wife and son together in the same plot as Sarah's parents and grandparents at the Avery Morgan Cemetery in Groton, New London, CT
Sarah HAMMOND, daughter of Thomas HAMMOND and his wife Sarah AVERY was born 15 Apr 1815. She died 31 Oct 1840 aged 25.
[A CD of the gravestones in the Avery Morgan Cemetery is available for purchase from the Avery Association]
Benjamin married secondly, Ann Marie AVERY, his first wife's cousin, 23 Oct 1854 in Groton, CT by Elder Isaac CHESEBROUGH. She was a dressmaker born 27 Jan 1830, daughter of Urbane AVERY and his wife [also an AVERY] Amanda Malvina AVERY. They had a son and a daughter, Elizabeth Avery BURROWS and Benjamin Franklin BURROWS.
Sadly, Ann Marie AVERY died 12 April 1860 leaving Benjamin with two small children. He married third, Frances Levina DENISON on 5 May 1837. They were married by her brother, the Civil War Chaplin and Baptist Minister, Rev. Frederic DENISON. She was the daughter of Isaac DENISON and his wife Levina FISH. [my third great grandparents]
Frances was 29 and single at the time of their marriage and probably considered a spinster. She raised his children and out lived him. She buried him with his second wife and is buried with her Denison family at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, New London, CT.
The Burrows genealogy tells us that Benjamin was only 10 years old when he went with his father to Havana, Cuba and at 17 he was a sailor and mate on the schooner Bolivar. In 1838, he was a full sea captain of the schooner, "Talma" and continued in the commerical maritime trade until 1872 when he went into the Coal Trade.
Benjamin lived a prosperous life on "Skipper St." at 5 West Mystic Avenue, was a Whig and a Republican serving in the legislature in 1864. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Burrows Genealogy
Burrows Cemetery Transcription Project
Before venturing out to this cemetery, I located this family history and genealogy compiled and published in 1975. I located it at Ancestry.com and was surprised because so many of the genealogies found online were compiled or written and published in the late 1800s.
Mr. Burrows, whose first name was probably Raymond, resided in Lakewood, OH. Page 5 of this typewritten document, gives the date of the foreword as December 1974 and his home address as 12075 Lake Ave. Lakewood (Cleveland), Ohio 44107. I am wondering if Mr. Burrows is still living? So, I use the index to locate the name Burrows, Raymond Earle and easily find him listed on pages 512 and 513.
He is listed as born 17 Feb 1894 and being married to Edith HOLE 11 Sept 1920. She died in 1939 and she is listed as being buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermillion, OH. This cemetery is listed at Find a Grave as being in Erie County but no Burrows surname graves are listed.
My next step is to add some data from the genealogy to the Burrows names already in my tree at Ancestry.com.
