It is safe to touch these gravestones as they are hollow metal. I have blogged about them before, so please go here and read what I have written.
The Association of Gravestone Studies has a catalog in PDF of these special markers [Monumental Gravestones Catalog] I love the price list.
Gale Wall, who writes the blog, Digital Cemetery Walk, wrote a great post about them. The company that manufactured most of these markers was called the Monumental Bronze Company and many veteran's graves are memorialized by this type of marker. [Civil War Monument Web site]
Recently while browsing through Google Books, I found a book about this type of gravestone by Lynn Johansen. (Selected pages are part of the preview)
Amy's Genealogy, Etc. blog also does a great job with showing examples.
There are those folks who ONLY take photo of White Bronze markers. [Flickr group]
