This large monument lists a Capt' John HOLDREDGE and his wives and his two sons who did not survive to adulthood. Sadly, they had no more children. Why he is on the side of this monument makes us wonder why there is a John Hoxy listed with this family when the son of Capt' Holdredge named John died in 1835. At first, we thought that this child must be John Holdredge Hoxie living with this now childless couple.

A fellow researcher helped us solve this mystery. She found the 1850 census record for Benjamin F. HOXIE and family by using the Family Search pilot Web page, which listed Benjamin as Benj. After examining that, I was able to find it using the page numbers of the census. [The census taker's handwriting needs improvement.] This is an important as many families already in my tree are on the same two pages as Benjamin's family!

John and his wife Mary VanRyper had four children. Some are buried in this section that is Hoxie and Holdredge so watch for upcoming blog posts about them.
