Joseph SCHOLFIELD

Joseph Scholfield/ DIED/ March 12, 1869, /In the 80th year/ of his age.

This is the first Joseph Scholfield (my 4th great grandfather) in my line as his son Joseph Arthur Scholfield and his son Joseph A. Schofield  were also my ancestors.

Born in England on 23 March 1789, young Joseph was only four years old when his parents and uncle left England to come to America. When he grew up, he lived in Stonington as a merchant of his family woolen business until 1834 when he moved to Montville.

Joseph's wife was Mercy NEWBURY and when she died, he moved to Uncasville where he died on 12 March 1869 quite close to his 80th birthday.

This gravestone, void of decoration is typical of this period.  The lines on it may be from weathering or from the lawn mowing equipment scarring the surface.

Hi Midge, I am really enjoying reading about the Scholfield/Schofield family from CT. Likely that our mutual ancestors knew one another in Stonington and Mystic, CT.
