Dudley W. STEWART plot
Eliza Fish DENISON Stewart, was the daughter of Isaac DENISON and his wife Levina FISH.
Eliza is my connection to the Denison family.
This blog will serve as a shared resource for those who are interested in gravestone photography, genealogy and family history. Most of the photographs will be of my ancestors or of cemeteries I am photographing, transcribing and researching. [Charter member of The Association of Graveyard Rabbits.]

Evans STEWART, Jr.
1917--1951
Evans STEWART, Jr. was the only son of Evans STEWART and his wife Hannah Josephine BARBER. Evans, Jr. was born 18 Jun 1917 in Westerly, RI and died [self-inflicted gunshot wound to the brain] 28 Jan 1951 in Columbus, OH.
Evans graduated from Cranston High School [East] and attended junior college. He was attractive and popular. He could play the piano by ear.
Evans was a veteran of WWII [rank of private, warrant officer] and was 5'7 inches tall and weighed 125 lbs. on his enlistment papers on 21 Apr 1941.
He married Henrietta, widow of JONES, and lived with her and her son Tommy in Columbus until his death by suicide. This was a family tragedy that happened in my lifetime. I have a locket he gave me at my birth.
Evans STEWART, Jr. was the uncle of Midge Frazel

Evans STEWART
1886--1955 [Beloved Grandfather of Midge Frazel]
Evans7 (Charles6, Dudley5, Edward4, Nathan3, William2, Lt. William1) was born 22 September 1886 in North Stonington, CT. His father Charles Edward STEWART, of N. Stonington and his mother Adah Ann EVANS of Adams, MA lived there for a time and then moved to Westerly, RI. Charles's father was Dudley Wheeler STEWART, last child of Edward STEWART and wife Rebecca NOYES.
Rebecca's brother Avery Denison NOYES is buried in this plot.
Dudley married Eliza Fish DENISON, daughter of Isaac DENISON and Levina FISH buried here. After Dudley died, she went to live with her son Charles and his wife Ada and so, Evans lived with his grandmother and heard the "Denison stories".
Evans took part of his father's business [Westerly Laundry] and moved to Cranston, RI after marrying Hannah Josephine BARBER of Westerly. Evans and H. Josephine had two children: Dorothy Frances [my mother] and Evans Jr.
Evans died in Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston on 26 June 1955.

As Levina FISH Denison was still alive when the camera was invented, there are photographs of her. The Denison Society was kind enough to scan this for me and allow me to post it with her gravestone photo.
Levina was a very strong presence in her family and in the community. She was widely known for her Thanksgiving feasts. Her son Rev. Frederick Denison, a minister, writer and family historian, wrote poems about her.

This is the front of the Denison stone. As you can see the top of the stone shades the top inscriptions.
The front is easier to read. The sides and back of the stone seem not to be polished the same way and the names and dates carved there are harder to read.
My grandmother, Hannah Josephine BARBER, wife of Evans STEWART chose not to have her name carved on the back of this monument but did have her husband [Evans], her son, [Evans Jr.] and her brother-in-law [Dudley Wheeler Stewart] on the back.

This is the first in a series of photographs taken of the largest memorial stone in the Denison section of Elm Grove Cemetery. As it displays the dates of birth and death for many Denisons, I will be posting each side enough times to view all of the names.
Many of the names on this stone also have a separate gravestone marking the spot where they are buried.

This is an example of the reason for making sure that you have looked at all sides of a gravestone while photographing them. As Ebenezer DENISON had two wives, each child buried here needs to be identifies with the correct mother.
