Dwight GALLUP and Lydia Ann WADHAMS

I always enjoy researching these lovely granite monuments. They look so everlasting and there is plenty of place for carving full names and dates.

Dwight7 (Lodowick6, Nathan5, Benadam4, Benadam3, John2, John1) was born 14 April 1825, married Lydia Ann WADHAMS 19 Nov 1849. He was born in Groton/Ledyard and married in Goshen, Litchfield, CT. Lydia was born on 8 Mar 1824 to Lewis Collins WADHAMS and his wife Lydia GALLUP. Lydia GALLUP was the daughter of Jacob GALLUP. She died 22 July 1906 and he lived after her until 16 Apr 1911.

Lydia Ann Gallup in the 2009 genealogy is number is #2717, p. 335 The oldest (1893) Gallup genealogy states that Dwight and Lydia married and farmed in Goshen until after the Civil War where they moved to Ledyard to farm there. However, the 1850 census shows they are living with Lodowick in Ledyard and by the 1860 census they are living in Ledyard with three living children. Dwight's June 1863 Civil War Draft Registration list him as being a farmer in Ledyard. I can find no record of them in Goshen except for their marriage.

This couple had six children. Their infant son was born and died and is buried in this Gallup cemetery. The rest survived to adulthood and the first child, a daughter married Russell Gallup.

At his last (1910) census, he is widowed, 85 years old and living with two of his children and a cousin. His daughter Lydia, who is buried here remained unmarried as is listed as Lillian. His son Moses, who dies in 1935 lives with them.
