Family History Writing Challenge 2014

Lynn Palermo, used with permission

Family History Writing Challenge

For the fourth year, Lynn Palmero, The Armchair Genealogist, of Canada, offers a month long writing challenge with directions and support. I started with participating last February and put my posts in my other blog, Beyond the Horizon.

This year, I will put posts here in Granite-in-My-Blood because I have more followers and for the first year, I am retired from being a professional genealogist and now I write when I want and about what I want. If you are used to seeing gravestone research here, those posts will return in March (after a week or so break).

Last year, I wrote about the oldest photographs in my family collection. That was fun and very productive. So, this year, I decided to tackle some of the snapshots that were also family photographs that belonged to my parents and grandparents.

All summer, I have been scanning those photos that I will need for this challenge and talking to people that I will need to help me with this project. This has actually been years in the making but I will talk about that as I go along.

My project this year is called "The Plat" and is going to be about my childhood neighborhood and surrounding area. As it is with all genealogists, we get the hunger for the ancestors and forget that we have to write about ourselves. Most of the photographs will be of me and I am so cute you will forget that I am now a sixty-six year old grandmother.

Technology plays a large part in this project and social media too, so for the first week of the challenge, I will explain how I accomplished the research so perhaps you can find your neighborhood too! It may take several posts each day that week. Clear off your calendar and shine up your reading glasses for I am going to write a lot.

Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you enjoy this project. We will begin January 27th with a "behind the scenes" look at what it takes to prepare to writing this type of blog posts.
