Marian H. GILLFILLAN was the only child of Frank GILFILLAN and his wife Harriet HOXIE. She was a school teacher who did not marry. After her father died, she lived with her mother until she died.
Marian was born 10 July 1904 in Stonington, CT. She is listed in the 1930 census as a school teacher and also in the CT Death Index.
She is buried next to her mother in the Hoxie plot. It is unknown why there is an extra i carved in the surname on this stone.
This is the last stone in the lovely Hoxie plot at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, New London, CT.

Harriet HOXIE
Harriet HOXIE was the daughter of John Holdredge HOXIE and Mary E. VanRyper. The Denison genealogy lists her names as Harriet Denison Hoxie (#2434-9, p. 458). She was born 23 July 1875 in Mystic and is listed with her parents in the 1880 census.as 5 years old.
Harriet married Frank GILFILLAN 26 October 1901 as listed on p.458 of the Denison genealogy and they lived in Stonington and Hartford. They returned to Stonington by the 1930 census.
Frank doesn't seem to be buried with his wife and daughter, but he is recorded as having died in 1953. As you can see by this gravestone, Harriet was a widow and lived 10 years after her husband dying on 23 June 1963 and was buried in the HOXIE plot.
Frank was from Vermont and lived in Rhode Island until he and Harriet married. He was a stockbroker. (1900 census) He may have been buried with his parents in Rhode Island.

Gravestone work can be tricky and after several hours of research you may not transcribe the names and dates correctly. I really thought I'd made a mistake.

Eugenia Barbara HOXIE
Eugenia "Jean" Barbara Hoxie was the daughter of John Holdrege Hoxie and Emma Neville and was born 16 April 1921. She married first, Thomas Willey Parker and they had a son named Richard Hoxie Parker.
Notice how the Hoxie name keeps turning up (as middle names) in the later generations in this family!
Jean married secondly Gino Raimondi. She was a claims adjuster for General Dynamics. She died 12 May 1996 and is buried at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic with her parents. Her gravestone lists both her married names. I did not see either husband buried in this section.

Emma Louise NEVILLE
Emma Louise NEVILLE, wife of John Holdredge HOXIE, was born 30 Mar 1884 in Quebec, Canada. According to family sources and her marriage record, Emma's parents were Thomas Neville and Margaret (Marguerite) Corcoran. She immigrated to America in 1905 at the age of 21.
John H. Hoxie and Emma Louise Neville were married in Cambridge, Massachusetts on 31 Dec 1915. There are two records for this marriage both recorded in the Massachusetts Vital Records 1911-1915, that I have access to via my subscription to NEHGS. One is a typewritten record from Boston (2:592) and the other is the handwritten record for Cambridge (632:447). For both this was their first marriage. John is a 35 year old insurance underwriter living at 194 Huntington Ave in Boston and Emma is a 29 year old saleswoman, living at 17 Creighton St. in Cambridge. They were married by John J. Fletcher, Priest at 1448 Dorchester Ave. in Dorchester, MA. It doesn't look there is a church at that location today. Their parents names are listed correctly. [I love a good marriage record!]

Fireman Flag Holder
Never again will I make the assumption that all flag holders are because of military service. This one is for the members of the Benjamin Franklin Hoxie Steam Fire Engine Company founded in 1875. It was named after BF Hoxie whose gravestone is here. As I look back at the photos I have taken, there is more than one of these flag holders on Hoxie graves.
As this is located next to the grave of John Holdrege Hoxie (Jr.) who was a fire examiner and a descendant of BF Hoxie, I am not sure that it is not on the wrong grave.
BF Hoxie donated the money for the fire company but to my knowledge he did so because he was a prominent citizen and was not actually a firefighter. There is a Facebook page for the Mystic River Historical Society and there are photos of a display of men who were firemen. It is SO interesting.

John H. HOXIE
John Holdrege HOXIE was the last child born to John Holdredge HOXIE and his wife Mary E. VanRyper. He was born 22 Sept 1880 and died 16 Feb 1945. Born in Mystic he died in West Hartford at age 64. He was a fire examiner.
In 1942, according to his WWII Draft Card he was working in Glens Fall, NY for the Glen Falls Insurance Co. He had a joint missing on his index finger of his right hand.
About 1915 he married Emma Louise NEVILLE and they had a daughter. He had a draft card for WWI and at the time he was a fire examiner in Boston. The 1930 census says "No" in the column for veteran so I had to take a closer look at the flag holder next to this headstone. See tomorrow's blog post for this interesting marker.

Elizabeth F. HOXIE
Elizabeth F. HOXIE was the unmarried daughter of Charles H. HOXIE and his wife Marguerite. After her father died, she and her mother went on two cruises together (Bermuda and France), leaving behind a valuable clue in the passenger list to solve the mystery of what her mother's maiden name might be.
In that passenger list, Elizabeth's place of birth in Massachusetts was spelled incorrectly. Taking a stab at the right location, I hit paydirt to easily find her birth record in the Massachusetts vital records for the city of Quincy! On her birth record, her name is listed as Elizabeth Foote Hoxie, with the same birth date as this gravestone. Her father's name is correct with his occupation as insurance agent and her mother's name as "Daisy" Foote. [Daisy is a common nickname for Marguerite.]
Elizabeth lived as a devoted daughter to her mother in Massachusetts and died there in 1986 as you can see my her gravestone. Whether her mother "Daisy" is related to the Foote grave nearby is still to be determined.

Marguerite F. HOXIE
Marguerite F. Hoxie who was born 12 Jan 1874 and died 25 Jan 1967 was the husband of Charles H. HOXIE. I don't know her maiden name. One census record says her first name is F. Marguerite which is contrary to this gravestone. I so wish women would record their maiden names on their gravestones! [Even my own mother didn't do this!]
Apparently, Marguerite was born in New York to parents who were born in Massachusetts. She and Charles married about 1899 maybe in Boston. That's about all the census records can tell us about her.

Charles H. HOXIE
Charles H. HOXIE was born 15 Sept 1871 in Mystic, a son of John Holdredge HOXIE and his wife Mary E. VanRyper. He had three brothers and a sister. He is listed with his family in the 1880 census in Stonington at the age of 9 and by the time the next census rolled around in 1900, he was married to a woman named Marguerite who is buried next to him.
The 1900 census MAY have Charles and Marguerite listed twice. Once on the 6th of June and the next on the 11th of June once in Stonington and the next in Boston. It is possible that they moved to Boston that week.
The one in Stonington was enumerated by his own brother, John Holdridge HOXIE, Jr. so it holds more credibility in evidence. A side by side comparison study is the next step in the process. It is enough to make a genealogist go mad.
Charles H. HOXIE died 29 Jan 1928 at the age of 56.It appears that he and his wife did not have children.

Joseph W. LAMBERT
Joseph W. LAMBERT, husband of Mary H. HOXIE, rests next to his wife and his daughter. There is some small comfort in that, isn't there?
The stone tells us that he was born in 1838 and died in 1908. But the 1900 census lists his month and year of birth as Dec 1837. It also list his place of birth as Connecticut with his father being born in RI and mother in CT. Even more mysterious is his occupation which looks like Connecticut Travel (Hosing). Perhaps that should read Housing?

Mary Holdredge HOXIE
Mary Holdrege HOXIE was a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hoxie and his wife Harriet Elizabeth CLIFT. Her headstone is simple granite and lists her with her married surname and the year of her birth and death. Simple, right? Not at all.
She was born 27 Dec 1847 in Mystic, New London, CT according to the Denison Genealogy (p. 457). but the 1900 census lists her as being born in Dec 1848 which fits with this gravestone. She married Joseph W. Lambert on 7 Feb 1872 in Stonington and moved to Stamford, Fairfield, CT. Once again, the 1900 census indicates that they were married 27 years which makes the year of marriage 1873.
The Denison genealogy gives a reference code for who gave the information and this family is listed as Mrs. Franks Parcells [Elsie Post HOXIE] and Mrs. Frank Gilfillan [Harriet A. HOXIE].
Prior to her marriage, Mary is listed with her parents and siblings in the 1860 and 1870 census. I have not located this family in the 1880 census and that must be rectified as their daughter was born in 1880.
Finding conflicting data is quite distressing as it means that a "reasonably exhaustive search" is not complete. One small comfort is that this family has no descendants which gives us more time to find out about Mary, Joe and Nellie.
It is interesting how I begin to think of these long dead people, who are not part of my family, as people I once knew.

Nellie Hoxie LAMBERT
Nellie Hoxie LAMBERT was the only child of Mary H. HOXSIE and Joseph W. LAMBERT. She was born in the year 1880 and died in 1950. She was unmarried.
After her father died, she continued to live with her mother. She was a devoted daughter and was probably unmarried. I did find a death record [Connecticut Death Index] for her which states that she was married but there's no evidence to support this. She was 70 years old at her death, the gravestone lists her maiden name and she is buried with her parents.
The 1900 census states she was born in Feb 1880 but I have not yet located the 1880 census for the family. This family lived in Stamford and Greenwich counties but all all buried together in the Hoxie plot.

Elsie Post HOXIE was the daughter of Charles Denison Hoxie and Rosa A. POST. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on 11 Nov 1884 and appears in the 1900 and 1910 census with her parents in Brooklyn. The date on the 1910 census is 23 Apr and she married Frank Howland Parcells on 9 November of that year.
This couple lived their married life in New York until Frank died in 1946. Elsie died 16 July 1972. They had no children and are buried side-by-side in the Hoxie plot at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, New London, CT.
As you can see by the DAR emblem on her gravestone, Elsie was a n active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Denison Genealogy (page 458) states that in addition to the DAR, Elsie was a member of the National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America and she was President General of the Society of Colonial Daughters of the 17th century. Elise was educated at the Packer Collegiate Inst.
Elsie's list of ancestors in the DAR database include: Eleazer Bill, Stephen Barber, Daniel Denison, Amos Clift, Gideon Hoxie, Phineas Post and Samuel Clift. That's quite a list and helps confirm her list of ancestors for the Hoxie descendants I am working with on this project.

Rosa A. POST
Rosa A. POST was the wife of Charles Denison HOXIE and the daughter of Charles A. POST and his wife Lucy Ann BILL of Connecticut. She was born 15 Feb 1855 and died 31 Oct 1938 after being a widow. She was the mother of Elsie Post Hoxie and made her home with her after Charles died.
In 1880 she was living with her parents in Hartford, CT and did not marry until 17 Jan 1882. Rosa is buried next to her husband.

Charles D. HOXIE

In what military service Charles served, I can't seem to find it nor is he listed in the 1880 census. He was single then, but he's not living with his parents. This certainly means more research for this gravestone!

Frank HOXIE
Frank HOXIE was a seaman. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin HOXIE and his wife Harriet E. CLIFT. Frank was born 21 Mar 1852 in Mystic, New London, CT and died presumably at sea near Thailand on 5 Dec 1871 at the age of 19. He was single.
In the 1860 census, he is 8 years old and lives with his parents and siblings. In the 1870 census, he is 18 years old with the occupation of seaman but is still living with his parents.
Without the family that I am working with, I would wonder what happened to Frank. Sometimes with situations like this, a body is not recovered and there is no gravestone. It is great that the family put one up for him here in the family plot at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic, CT

Fannie HOXIE
Fannie HOXIE, daughter of Benjamin Franklin HOXIE and his wife Harriet W. CLIFT was born 13 July 1856 in Mystic, New London, CT. According to this gravestone, she died at age 29 on 9 Oct 1885.
She is easily found in the 1860 and 1870 census living with her parents. She had two husbands. The first was Morton F. HUNT, who is buried beside her. He and Fannie were only married a few months before she died in October of that year.

She is easily found in the 1860 and 1870 census living with her parents. She had two husbands. The first was Morton F. HUNT, who is buried beside her.
