Ebenezer DENISON was then oldest child and oldest son of Isaac DENISON [Sr.] and his wife Eunice WILLIAMS. He was born 10 July 1774 and died 20 Dec 1856; m (1) Jane Branch WILLIAMS and (2) Phebe W. (Moore) SMITH.

He was the father of three children with his first wife Jane, who he married 10 Feb 1798.
Daniel (1800-1802), Ebenezer, Jr. (1802-1869), and Sala B. (1805-1809)
All of his children and both his wives are buried near him.

He was a Deacon of his church and his wife, Phebe, was prominent in organizing Sunday Schools in Stonington. Possibly Phebe was born 5 Nov 1769 daughter of Micah MOORE and his wife Abigail HEMPSTEAD, widow of Ledyard. The current Denison Genealogy states her name as Phebe W. SMITH and the older Baldwin & Clift Denison Genealogy lists her as Phebe M. SMITH.

Phebe's maiden name was MOORE. She was first married to a lawyer, Joseph Parker WICKHAM and upon his death, freed the slaves that he owned. She was a wealthy widow. She next married Edward SMITH, a descendant of the Rev. Nehemiah SMITH, and after he died she married Deac. Ebenezer Denison, Sr. Her only child was with her first husband and was named William E. SMITH, born in Stonington; died in Brooklyn at 75 years.

This accounts for the differences in her name in various sources.

Ebenezer married Phebe ten years after his first wife died on 12 Sept 1816 and the couple had no children together.

Phebe was a stong willed woman of great prominence in the church in her time. She organized the second Sunday School in America, and was widely known for her quick mind and her views on temperance. It is remarkable that she does not have a more prominent gravestone.

DENISON monument

(Rev. Erastus DENISON and his wife Prudence SPICER are buried with separate headstones to the left of his parents Frederick DENISON, Jr. and Hannah FISH. )

Rev. Erastus DENISON, son of Frederick DENISON and his wife Hannah FISH and brother to Charles H. and Frederick, Jr [buried nearby,] was born 22 Dec 1791 and died of cancer 20 Sept 1866. He was a Baptist minister.

He served as minister in the Third Stonington Baptist Church from 1862-1865 ministering to a black congregation.

He married Prudence SPICER, of Groton, daughter of John5 SPICER (Edward4, John3, Edward2, Peter1) and his wife Elizabeth LATHAM, in Groton on 25 June 1815. They were married by John G. Wightman, Elder.

Prudence was born 1 May 1795 in Groton/Ledyard and died 21 May 1864. She and Rev. Erastus had nine children, all died unnamed in infancy.

This plot contains the following words on the side of the memorial monument:

Frederick DENISON, Jr. (old stone)

This is probably the original gravestone of Frederick DENISON, Jr. It was found in a barn and turned in to the Denison Homestead. This is a photo I took of it as it was on display on Denison Day.

I KNEW it looked familar but it wasn't until I reviewed my photos that I found the newer one at Elm Grove Cemetery. It has almost the same wording on it but it used the older date format of May 31ft. [read that as 31st]

Does anyone know where his widow is buried? Did she marry again? Two gravestone double the questions!

Frederick DENISON, Jr. son of Frederick DENISON and his wife Hannah FISH was born 22 May 1790. He was the oldest child born to them; nine months and three days after their marriage.

His stone is behind his parents. He was married to Desire FRINK on 11 Sept 1814. The couple had no children. As he was only 27 when he died, it is likely that his widow married again and that is why she is not buried with him in this plot.

It is unusual, but sometimes, there are two gravestones for one person! Frederick is one of those lucky people.

Hannah FISH, wife of Frederick DENISON

Hannah FISH was the daughter of Nathan FISH, Jr. and his wife Catherine HELME. Hannah was born 3 Aug 1764 in Groton and died 22 Feb 1847, she married Frederick DENISON 19 August 1789 in Groton.

This woman is the AUNT of Hannah FISH (1792-1815 unmarried daughter of Dea. Sands FISH and his wife Bridget GALLUP) buried in the Old Fish Burying Ground.

Notice the wording on this stone. Her husband's stone probably had similar ("matching") wording.

I am learning that I need to take more photos of groups of gravestones. This section shows placement of stone which, without this photo, I might never have figured out.

Sharon DeBartolo Carmack's Book, "Your Guide to Cemetery Research", is an excellent read for those of us who like exploring ancestors at rest.

On page 158, she tells us that a husband is usually placed to the left of the husband ("woman was created from the left rib of Adam") and in this case, this is how I have identified the gravestone of Frederick Denison, Sr.

Elm Grove Cemetery is a well maintained beautiful garden cemetery. It is a joy to take photos in this peaceful place.

Using the Mirror

Using the Mirror
Originally uploaded by midgefrazel.

Compare this digital photograph with the one taken at an earlier date with the strong sunlight and the mirror.

I used my fingers to trace the letters and dates of the previous photograph and then wrote down what what on the stone. Notice, the angled of the shot also makes a difference.

"No Night Shall Be In Heaven"

This is the lower portion of the gravestone of Maria Louise (Noyes) Davis.

When recording gravestone is is important to examine all side and the top and the bottom for important epitaphs, dates or stonecutter's marks.

Maria Louise NOYES

Maria Louisa NOYES daughter of William S. NOYES and his wife Louisa Lamb was the young wife of William H., DAVIS.

This gravestone stands out in this cemetery plot area because of its cross shape and size. (See the base in the next photo).

I have taken several photos trying to read the inscription but it was only accomplished correctly with strong morning sun and the use of a mirror's reflection to make the lettering stand out.

Ira C. NOYES
Originally uploaded by midgefrazel.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every gravestone had such nice words for the life of someone buried there?

Ira C. NOYES, son of Cyrus NOYES and his wife Bridget Gallup DENISON.

Ira was born 5 June 1859 and died in 1922. As Ira never married the census lists him living with his father's household (1880 census) after his mother died in 1876, with his sister Annie and brother Everett. In 1880, Ira was a clerk in a post office. In the 1900 census, after both parents have died, he is a boarder in his sister Jane and brother in law's James Ryley's household. He is employed as a railroad laborer. In the 1910 census, Ira is still living with his sister and her children and works in the banking industry. In 1920, (two years before his death) he is a clerk in a bank.

There is no one left to remember Ira but his gravestone says it all. I always give him a friendly hello and smile when I pass by his grave.

William S. NOYES and wife Louisa LAMB

William S. NOYES, son of Avery NOYES and his wife Polly SLACK and brother to Avery D. NOYES was born 2 Jan 1811 and died 6 Oct, 1890. He married Louisa LAMB 16 November 1836. [I am unable to find out who Louisa LAMB's parents were or her actual date of birth at this time.]

Louisa died 11 Dec 1871 aged 61 years so she was born abt 1810.

"Her children arise and call her blessed." [Proverbs 31:28]

Louisa and William's gravestone are joined together on a large granite base. They were the parents of children born in Norwich, CT (LDS records) Maria L. born abt 1841, George W. born abt. 1845 and Mary E. born abt. 1846.

There is an unrecorded child William Avery NOYES whose gravestone clearly states he was the son of William and Louisa. I am unable to find a matching vital record for this toddler who died when he was two.

The Census gives us more information about this couple. William's occupation was painter and his unmarried daughter Mary lived with him after Louisa died in 1871.

Sometimes a gravestone can only be identified by its position in the cemetery. This badly damaged gravestone also has a footstone which is broken.

Fred Burdick's CD of Whitehall Burying Ground #21, says that this grave once said: "In memory of Esther, wife of Elisha Williams who died May 10th 1762 in the 32nd year of her age."

Esther was the daughter of Jonathan4 (Richard3, Isaac2, Thomas1) Wheeler and his wife Esther Denison. She was born 27 Dec 1732, the oldest child of eleven. She was the third wife of Elisha. His first wife died early in their marriage and his second wife died leaving him with three children to take care of.

As with many families of this time period, it was less than a year after his second wife died that he married Esther. Esther and Elisha had but one child, Eunice Williams. Sadly, Eunice was only 7 years old when her mother died.
